Drug Class follows real-life Saskatchewan teens struggling with varying levels of drug and alcoholconsumption. The series interweaves their everyday lives with the classes and counseling sessions of Saskatchewan drug expert and teacher Rand Teed. The teens and their families learn how drug use impacts their lives – physically, mentally and spiritually.
It’s a candid, often gritty, show that features teens learning to cope with drug problems through Teed’s straight-forward, non-judgemental methodology based on harm mitigation. There’s no hectoring the youth to just quit: instead Teed is a steadying and sincere teacher who leads his voluntary course in several Regina high schools. Some kids do go straight; others aren’t so lucky.
This season, SCN is taking steps to reach parents and teens with more information by facilitating an interactive online chat with Rand Teed immediately following the broadcast of each episode in the 13-part series. Using an online web chat, Teed will answer questions raised from the episodes of the series.
“To reach our young target audience, we need to go where they gather, so in addition to the TV series and our main website at www.drugclass.ca, we created an online community through a number of social networks,” said show producer Lori Kuffner. “Viewers can log onto www.scn.ca/drugclass to chat live with Rand Teed as well as access additional resources, watch clips from the show and more. Drug Class also has a strong presence on Facebook with over 700 members contributing daily.”

Drug Class was nominated for a 2008 Gemini Award for Best Children’s or Youth Non- Fiction Program or Series, and series director Rob Pytlyk won a 2008 Gemini Award of Excellence for his work on the series. It’s produced by Lori Kuffner, president of Cooper Rock Pictures, who also produced the acclaimed SCN documentaries, Ted’s Story: Honouring Melissa, Struggle and Emerge: The Pere Athol Murray Story, and Running Against Crime.
